The unique pattern on Toast's cotton poplin dress is created by artisans in India using two traditional hand techniques. First, a wax-resist batik is created by applying wax with brush strokes to the fabric before dyeing it. Once the fabric dries, the wax is removed, leaving a resist pattern that varies naturally from piece to piece. Then, a second dimension is achieved through block printing, using carved wooden blocks dipped in dye. Shaped with waist ties and a gathered neck trim.
